Angove Shiraz Carignan 2016

South Australia

From the fiercely independent Angove family – former ‘Winery of the Year’ – comes this rich, velvety red. It’s a luscious and unusual (for Oz at least) combination of liquorice and blackberry scented Shiraz with big spice Carignan. Heart warming.

This rich red shows off the Angove family at their innovative best. Its pairing of grapes works splendidly in France’s warm Rhône valley and Languedoc, and looks likely to be a future star blend Down Under, judging by the seductive power of this wine. The Angoves have always been resourceful – Dr William Angove arrived in Australia from Cornwall in 1886 and as a hobby planted vines in Tea Tree Gully near Adelaide, made wine and mastered distillation. (To this day Angove makes Australia’s best known brandy.) The wine business really took off after William’s son, Skipper, studied oenology at Adelaide’s famous Roseworthy College. Today it’s run by the fourth generation. Enjoy this wine with steak and chips, roast pork or a hearty lasagne.
