With 96 points from Descorchados, 94 from Tim Atkin MW, it's clear Alto de Piedras is an exceptional red. It's from a single vineyard in Maipo, the first place in Chile that Carmenère was grown. A wine with intense red fruit, spice and herbal length.

From the 4th-generation De Martino family, Alto de Piedras shows what finesse, elegance, power and richness can be achieved in Chile's best sites. The family left Italy for South America in 1934 and made the Cachapoal Valley their home. They now have the largest holdings of organic vineyards in Chile, so their wines can show a sense of "place, purity and balance". Alto de Piedras comes from a vineyard they planted 30 years ago in the Isla de Maipo. It was the first place that Carmenère took root in Chile, so is of historical significance. With soils of sand, clay and gravel, it keeps the vines thirsty and flavours concentrated, while ripening is slow. Whole bunch fermentation with wild yeasts and ageing in barrel, this is a wine to savour.
