Pomerol is the world’s capital of Merlot; a tiny, clay-rich appellation of Bordeaux home to some of the finest and most sought-after wines in the world, such as £2000 a bottle Château Pétrus. There are no Grand Cru classifications here … the appellation is so small that quality is uniformly phenomenal – the name “Pomerol” is enough. But certain châteaux still stand over the rest for quality. L’Eglise-Clinet does that vintage after vintage, consistently scoring higher in blind tastings than more expensive rivals. Looked after by Denis Durantou, it’s a triumph of old vines, superb terroir and note-perfect winemaking. Its concentrated black fruit and spices will continue to unfurl for decades, richly rewarding those with patience.
