Château Haut-Bages-Monpelou 2017

Pauillac AOC Cru Bourgeois

There are great wines to be found in the 2017 vintage, especially from the less well known names. This under the radar Pauillac, made by Château Batailley, is full of 2017's classic charm with sumptuous layers of black fruit, cedar and tobacco notes.

Château Haut Bages Monpelou is a very well situated property between Château Batailley (where it's made) and Grand Puy Lacoste. Its vineyards used to be part of Duhart Milon, until they were sold off in 1861, hence the lack of classification. Owned today by the Castéja family, the château makes a firm, traditional Pauillac, that can take time to open out, but shows lovely richness. However, the wines of 2017 are a little fresher in style, thanks to a cooler spell in August, so are, as Lisa Perrotti-Brown of RobertParker.com explains, all about “finesse, perfume and aromatic intensity”. With appealing tobacco, scented oak and black fruit flavours, the wine is ready to enjoy over the next few years. Partner with roast lamb and savour.

"Full of Pauillac character, it's an excellent wine that's worth knowing about" Jane Anson (91 Points)
