This is a rare white from the foot of northern Rhône's hallowed hill of Hermitage, where vineyards mostly produce fine reds. The characterful white Rhône grape Marsanne ripens to absolute perfection on this suntrap spot too. In the hands of third generation winemaker Marcel Guigal, it produces a rich white Crozes of remarkable balance and grace. That's particularly true in a great vintage like 2016, which suffered frost early on, but recovered with superb late autumn sunshine to produce outstanding quality. With enticing blossom hints, honeyed stone fruits and lush spice (from part ageing in second fill barrels) and bright minerality, this wine becomes richer with time. Open early and serve with cream sauced white meats or salmon en croûte.
