Chat with Vinny
Ernie and Jane Hunter were first to put New Zealand on the wine map with the Sauvignon Blanc from the little vineyard beside their winery. The 1985 vintage of that wine astonished everyone, consumers and experts alike, when Tony Laithwaite invited them to exhibit at our London Wine Show. The wine won every award going and started a passion worldwide for Marlborough Sauvignon. Ernie died tragically soon after their success. But Jane carried bravely on and was joined by Cloudy Bay next door, and many others besides. We have remained close to Hunter’s ever since – they are like family. And the Home Block Sauvignon, made purely from the grapes of that original vineyard, is exceptional.
The wine
Home Block is from their original 8-hectare vineyard … all the grapes handpicked in the cool early morning for extra freshness. The juice is fermented in stainless steel vat, with a 10% portion in old oak puncheons to add creamy texture and richness to the dazzling passionfruit and guava-fresh palate, without any overt oakiness. Critic Yvonne Lorkin described it as, “A superbly structured sauvignon with real complexity and personality and length of flavour. Delicious!” Only 2000 cases made each year.
Come and see for yourself!
If you're lucky enough to be touring in New Zealand, Marlborough is a must-do destination and Hunter's is top of the list there. You can wander through their award-winning native garden, visit their resident artist or linger at the Cellar Door with a glass of wine, pairing it with local and international artisan meats and cheeses.
