About the estate
Il Corto is the prized top vineyard of Paolo and Anna Rita Masi’s third-generation family estate, Fattoria di Basciano. It was founded over a century ago in the superior Rufina area of Chianti, by Paolo’s grandfather, who won a Gold in 1929. When Paolo took over in 1990, he loved the wines, but knew that he could make them even better. Over the last 30+ years, he’s made many improvements – from replanting vineyards to fine tuning in the cellar. The result has been many awards, right across the range, including praise for their great value. Only very small production, Vigna Il Corto is Paolo’s pinnacle of winemaking.
The wine
From the Il Corto vineyard, Paolo makes their magnificent, award-winning red of the same name. It’s largely Sangiovese, as you’d expect in this Chianti enclave, with a 10% portion of intense Cabernet Sauvignon.
Small production, handpicking, ageing in small French oak barriques … all the methods lavished on this intense, barrel-matured red.
Come and see for yourself!
Pop in if you're holidaying in the area, Paolo and Anna Rita would love to show you round! Enjoy a tour of the winery and sample wines from barrel. Please just drop them a line in advance so they can make arrangements, and don't forget to mention you're a Vineyard Partner.
What’s more, you can even stay over if you like. The Basciano farmhouse has four lovely apartments available to book.
Basciano's 13th century guard's tower is a truly historic building at the centre of the estate. Within its walls are four tastefully furnished apartments, with a shared pool just beyond. It's a wonderfully tranquil location, with breathtaking views in every direction. Enjoy the peace or venture further afield to explore historic cities such as Florence and Siena. There is much to see and do and Anna Rita will be very happy to make recommendations.
Paolo and Anna Rita are delighted to be sending loyal Vineyard Partners their reserved case of Trophy-winning Il Corto 2021. Read their award-winning news below, along with an update on what else has been happening in Tuscany’s beautiful Rufina and their Fattoria di Basciano estate.

Welcome – these are the simple, but delicious Tuscan dishes we like to eat
We will update our vintage information regularly to keep you up to date with what is drinking well now and what is good to keep. All the Il Corto wines are best opened early and decanted. They will become more complex with further cellaring, but are still very pleasurable to drink.
