Debut vintage from the perfect, 100-point Châteauneuf winemaker wins GOLD ... exclusive UK launch offer
It’s extremely frustrating when you’ve something to shout about – but no one seems to be listening. Just talk to the winemakers at the Cellier des Princes in the ancient Principauté d’Orange.
Overshadowed by the neighbours
Look at the map. They’re slap bang in the centre of some of the finest red wine real estate in all France, the magnificent southern Rhône – surrounded by famous names like Rasteau, Gigondas, Vacqueyras and, just to the south, mighty Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It doesn’t help that two of their nearest winemaking neighbours are Châteauneuf big guns, £60-a-bottle Domaine de la Janasse and £400-a-bottle Beaucastel. Not that the locals are trying to compete with such international superstars. They just want their rich local red from the former feudal principality of Orange to be heard.
Rich red breaks the silence ...
Named after the House of Orange’s famous king, Willem the Silent has instantly struck Gold-medal success. Better still, we have the only UK cases. “This is a wine that punches well above its humble price”
We like nothing better than finding quality and value under the noses of the famous names – and Willem the Silent delivers both.
Bring in the 100-point winemaker!
After all, they work with the same grapes, in the same soils, under the same hot sun as their fellow ‘Côtes-du-Rhôners’. As The Rolling Stones sing in Street Fighting Man … “What can a poor boy do?” Enter Philippe Cambie, one of the finest winemakers in next door’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape. This is the man who has notched not one but 15 perfect, 100-point scores from fine wine guru Robert Parker. He was happy to accept the invitation to come and help out.
So when our buyer Jehan heard about this special collaboration between a local cellar and arguably the top winemaker in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, he dropped everything so we would be the first wine merchants to try the debut vintage. Simply put: if you like the rich, spicy reds Rhône, you will love this!
Laithwaite's began in 1969, when geography student Tony Laithwaite took a job washing bottles in Bordeaux ...
and fell in love with wine and the people who make it. When he borrowed a van to share their delicious wines with
friends and neighbours at home, things went so well that hundreds of little wineries all around the world were soon
queuing to take part. Today we're the UK's No.1 home-delivery wine merchant, with over 1,500 wines to choose from
including red, white, rosé, Champagne, Prosecco, spirits ... you name it. Tony's still at it - and now really good
at washing bottles. Read more
