Our journey to net zero

Our journey to net zero

We're committed to environmentally friendly initiatives right across business and beyond - because we believe wine shouldn't cost the earth

One of the big industry-wide challenges is the carbon-footprint impact of manufacturing glass and transporting bottles. And while we don't have all the answers yet, we've made some very important steps forwards in our journey this year, including the introduction of more lighter-weight bottles and packaging innovations.

It's been great to see customers get behind these efforts. We still have a long way to go, but we'll get there. We have a responsibility to the next generation of customers, winemakers, wine growers and employees to do so.

That's a smart move

w/o Organic Frappato

100% recycled glass

w/o Frappato was launched in a bottle made from 100% recycled glass. Using recycled glass can result in up to 10% fewer emissions from bottling.

Cabalie 1l carton

Carton power

After the huge success of the 3L Wine Box format, we are trialling a couple of our bestsellers in 1L cartons. Stay tuned for how they go down!

Paper bottles

Paper bottles

Lightweight and made from card around a plastic pouch, this equals an 80% saving in carbon emissions compared to a standard glass bottle.

Offsetting isn't the answer

We've offset the emissions from every customer delivery for years - that's over 40 million bottles every year, The easiest path would be to do the same for the other carbon emissions for which we are directly responsible and call it job done, but that's not our style.

Instead we're tackling emissions head on, aiming to double UK bottling, converting to green energy then owned renewables, overhauling bottle weights, and more.

"Around 98% of our carbon footprint is only indirectly connected to us. But to understand our full impact, we must look at the entire supply chain," says Chris Millson, Laithwaites' first Head of Sustainability.

"This means vineyards, wineries, bottling, freighting, retail, delivery and beyond. Implementing change across all these areas is vital.

"We've already started funding some work to help suppliers on their own sustainability journeys. Helping them to measure their footprints, better understand their soil health, monitor energy usage and determine the business case for switching to renewables.

"We're proud of our achievements so far, but we're still learning - and we need to take people with us. Climate change in hurtling towards us like a freight train, so we urgently need this collaborative approach."
