Pale straw in colour with golden highlights, this delicious malt has sweet woody aroma, with a touch of perfume and floral notes. Its delicate flavours are accompanied by spicy notes and a slight burnt wood character, followed by a long, smooth, gently smoky finish.

The Glenburgie distillery, founded in 1829 by William Paul, was originally known as Kilnflat, and consisted of a tiny stone building which still stands today. Unsurprisingly, considering its Lilliputian output, it went out of business before the current distillery was constructed on the site in 1870.

As long ago as 1887, the writer Alfred Barnard visited Glenburgie and described it in his book Whisky Distilleries of The United Kingdom, as “a very ancient distillery and about as old-fashioned as it is possible to conceive”.

In 1936 Glenburgie was bought by Ballantine’s, and at this time it was almost unique in having a manageress - Miss Nicol - a position few women have aspired to with the notable exception of Miss Bessie Williamson, owner and manager of Laphroaig.

Today the Glenburgie distillery successfully combines tradition with modern technology. Many of the original buildings still stand, and visitors are welcomed with a tour led by the current Distillery Manager, Brian Thomas.

The distillery’s main purpose is to provide high-quality malt whisky for use in superior blends, including Ballantine’s and Old Smuggler, but has also been bottled as a single malt at cask strength. This fine malt is taken from a single cask which has been matured for 25 years and bottled at full strength - a rare treat.
