Quinta do Vale D.Maria 1999Gold medal hand-picked old-vine port made by Cristiano Van Zeller of Quinta do Noval fame.
The new winery at Quinta do Vale Maria was up and running in the nick of time...and the grapes from this vintage were the first to pass through its doors. 1999 was characterised by low rainfall, this 'stress' on the the vines forced them to plunge their roots deeper into hidden mineral deposits - ultimately to produce richer, more concentrated flavours.
"Concentrated wine with intense smoke and earth. Voluptuous with super-ripe Morello cherry fruit allied to a supple tannic structure and rich sweetness..." (International Wine Challenge 2002).
