Description
Winning Gold at the Effervescents du Monde competition is a big deal indeed. Over 60 international judges score 350-plus sparkling wines from more than 20 countries ... and Ackerman 1811 Saumur Brut Rosé was also rated in 2006's ultimate Top 10 of the entire show - alongside such rarities as 1995 vintage Champagne. Considering the price, that's a remarkable achievement.

Ackerman is the Loire's oldest winery. It was founded in 1811 by Jean Ackerman, a Champagne grower who set up in Saumur. He knew this idyllic part of France boasted perfect climatic conditions and soil (clay and limestone, similar to Champagne) for making top-quality sparkling wines. 200 years on and it is the same techniques - from hand harvesting to ageing in traditional cellars dug deep into the chalky 'tuffeau' soil - that have delivered Gold medal success.
