This silky, blackberry-rich red slips down very easily as a glass on its own; it's tasty too with roast lamb, a rich casserole or, in Summer, it's ideal at a barbecue. Drink by end 2010.

Description
This is a delicious Aussie take on the northern Rhône's pricy Côte-Rôtie. It's from Bill Calabria at the Westend Estate in Riverina, New South Wales. Like many in this region, it was founded in the middle of the 20th century by Italian immigrants, Francisco and Elizabeth Calabria. Today, their two sons, Bill and Tony, run the family winery with great success. Former Golden Glove Boxing champion Bill Calabria has taken up the mantle of winemaker at the cellar. His mission is to show the world that wines from the Riverina region can match, even surpass, those from more prestigious appellations such as the Barossa and Hunter Valleys. Judging by the 500 or so medals he has accumulated over the last ten years, he certainly has a point. Bill prides himself on the quality of the grapes he uses, largely from his own lovingly tended estate, but also a few from recommended growers. He encourages low yields and gains impressive concentration in the wines. For this red, he has used the same 'recipe' as used in the northern Rhône's Côte-Rôtie appellation: nearly all Syrah, with just a splash of the highly aromatic white Viognier grape, to give a lift of blossom and apricot. A little gentle oak-ageing adds subtle notes of spicy oak.
