Description
IF you're fond of silky, mid-weight reds with lots of easy berry character, then Posada del Rey is a must-have. It's an exclusive cuvée from the Virgen de la Vega cellar in Rioja and their very talented winemaker, Daniel Freitas.

This cellar lies in the capital of La Rioja Alta (one of three subregions within Rioja itself, the other two being Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Baja), close to Bodegas Cune and Muga.

Having worked in Ribera del Duero as well as Rioja, Daniel has clocked up many top awards including Gold medals and some high 90 Point scores in the Wine Spectator.

This particular wine came about due to specific DOC rules that state that a cellar may only produce a certain amount of wine labelled Rioja each year. Anything above this limit must be declassified to a table wine or vino da mesa.

This is usually the liquid kept back and enjoyed by the locals - a bonus for living so close to the wineries, as these wines represent excellent value for money. Thanks to our close relationship with the bodega, we were able to persuade them to part with a portion of the 2006.

To give the wine a little extra weight and richness, Daniel put a small portion (23%) of blackberryish Garnacha, sourced from just outside the Rioja region.
