Description
This is a crisp, fresh modern wine from central Spain. Just a decade or so back, this freshness in a white from there would have been unheard of, but with the advent of modern technology and some pretty ambitious operators, so this region has been transformed into one of the most exciting in Spain.
Vega Oliveras is in fact from the Ramón Roqueta family winery, based in Pla de Bages in northeastern Spain. However, so impressed are they with the quality of fruit from Castilla, that every year, they earmark a parcel of Macabeo and one of Tempranillo, to make the Vega Oliveras wines.
Although the Ramón Roqueta winery dates back to 1199, the technology at the family cellar is ultra modern to produce the family's super fresh and fruity wines. Winemaker for the property is Juan Soler who carefully cool ferments the grapes at a low temperature in stainless steel vats to capture all the freshness and zingy, lemony fruit of the Macabeo grape. Also known as Viura, this variety is grown all over Spain and is the main constituent of white Rioja. In the hands of unscrupulous producers, its wines can be neutral, but when harvested at lower yields, it can offer delicious herbal freshness with light, lemony apricot notes. The variety usefully buds late, avoiding Spring frosts, and can withstand hot and arid conditions.
