Description For lovers of smooth, rounded whites with a bit of body, but unfettered by oak, Red Sheep will perfectly fit the bill. When Australian wines first hit our shores, the whites, particularly Chardonnay, were weighty and woody. Then winemakers realised how tiring all that oak was to our taste buds and have modified the style considerably. Now Chardonnays, like Red Sheep, have a lovely freshness that perfectly balances their innate creamy fruit.
Red Sheep is from De Bortoli, one of the best-loved family wineries in all Australia and also one of its most important. Founded in 1928 in Griffith, New South Wales, they now also own a cellar and vineyards in the premium Hunter and Yarra Valleys. Every year, they garner a huge number of awards, including in 2007 two for 'Winery of the Year' from critics Stuart McGregor and Peter Forrestall in his book Quaff. McGregor wrote of them "This is a family winery that is showing the way forward. Every winery in Australia could learn something from De Bortoli."
This wine is so named because of the many sheep that roam this outback part of Australia. Their white coats pick up the dust of the rust-coloured dry earth, hence the name red sheep. Enjoy in this wine pure Chardonnay, carefully fermented at a low temperature to capture the fruit and zestiness and bottled without any oak-ageing.
