Description
Aresti Old Vine is a fabulous, fresh Sauvignon Blanc with attractive weight from Chile, one of the hotspots for this grape right now. Once the sole preserve of the Loire and New Zealand, both sides of the Andes and South Africa are gaining a reputation for their high-quality, bristling fresh Sauvignons.
This is a cracker from the Aresti cellar in Rio Claro, tucked away in the Maule Valley. It was founded a half century ago by a partnership between Alfredo Lopez and Vincente Aresti who are today assisted by the third generation of each family.
'Old Vines' on the wine's label refers to 50-year-old plants, which supply the fruit for this wine. Sauvignon vines of this maturity are extremely rare in Chile, as most, up until the 1990s, were in fact the hybrid Sauvignonasse, which doesn't have the power or intensity of the real thing. The majority of these imposters has now been replanted with true Sauvigon Blanc and Aresti only ever use the real stuff anyway. In all the cellar's four vineyards, the proximity of the Andes (which provide the snowmelt water) and the Pacific (which brings cooling breezes) is extremely beneficial to the crisp, aromatic quality of this variety.
