Description
When Australia becomes a republic, it should toast its new president with a glass of Australia's iconic white, Semillon said Aussie writer Max Allen (something of an iconic figure in the industry himself). Australia's most classic examples of Semillon come from the Hunter Valley, cost a small fortune and can last decades, developing a wonderful rich spiciness and creamy lanolin flavour.
Out in the Riverina, they make excellent examples of Semillon at far more down-to-earth prices. This is one from the charismatic, Harley-riding Bob Berton who, just in 2006, set up on his own and has had great success from his very first vintage. We've known Bob for over a decade now, running the show at a handful of wineries around the Riverina region and have always been impressed with what he produces.
This is Bob's second vintage - a rather small, drought-stricken one at that, but with all the more concentration as a consequence. A small portion of unoaked Chardonnay added to the Semillon rounds out the wine with creamy peach notes. The grapes were all sourced from a single block of vines owned by local grower Frank Sergi, who named it after his mother, Maria.
