Born in 1881 in the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, Joseph Matrot was always interested in wine and began his career as a negociant, so when his wife inherited a small plot of Meursault vines with a rambling cottage, the pair set up residence and began renovating the estate. Originally it had been more of a farm, with cows, chickens, and horses for the ploughing, but having dealt in bottled wine previously, Joseph already had a network of customers, and committed himself purely to wine production.
Today the estate is run by Joseph's son Thierry, who, as well as having learned his trade first hand, has studied for an oenological diploma in Beaune.
