Description Fief du Temple takes its name from the Knights Templar who were based until 1311 on the land where the vines were grown. They were warrior monks who were among the first to grow vines in the Loire.
The vineyard is the property of Franck Chatelain, winemaker for the Bougrier family winery in Touraine. So when he vinifies this particular wine at their cellar, he does so with extra special care as he knows just how many hours he has spent lovingly tending his vines!
Although Chardonnay is grown not that far away in Champagne to the northeast and Chablis to the east, this grape isn't a native to the Loire. The region's most important white varieties are Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Melon de Bourgogne (in Muscadet). However, Chardonnay has adapted happily to the region and there takes on a minerally, citrussy freshness, similar to that of Chablis.
Indeed, at the World Chardonnay competition in 2005, where Fief du Temple scooped a silver medal, it beat many wines from this prestigious region. 2006 produced outstanding results in most of the Loire (it was a bit more patchy in the Nantes to the west), producing wines with lots of varietal character and crispness.
