Description
Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean and, with 160,000 hectares of vines, produces more than double the amount of wine that Australia does. Like Down Under, the vast majority of its wines are single varietals and, since major investment by some of the biggest players in the wine world, this island is producing some impressively modern, richly fruity wines.

It has an excellent microclimate too - poor soils, many hillside sites, cooling sea breezes and plentiful sunshine. In 2007, it did suffer from devastating Spring frosts, but that was very unusual.

The island also has a good range of interesting grape varieties bequeathed to them from former conquerors - from indigenous Zibibbo, Catarratto and Grillo to all the international stars.

This crisp, fragrant white is made purely from the Zibibbo grape, sometimes known as Moscatellone or Moscato di Alessandria, which tells you it is part of the Muscat family. This variety is the one responsible for the outstanding, but rarely seen, sweet wine Passito di Pantelleria from the tiny Mediterranean island, Isola di Pantelleria.

It is unusual to find this grape in Sicily and even rarer to discover it made into a dry white. It is well suited however, producing an enticingly crisp and scented white thanks to cool nights that offset some of the heat of the day. Cold fermentation has also helped retain freshness and fruit. Our buyer Thomas tasted this wine and reserved the lot!
