Weingut Josef Leitz is located in Rüdesheim, at the western end of the Rheingau. As the German Wine Guide notes, "Few in the Rheingau make finer wines than Leitz". The estate is run by Johannes Leitz, who took over the 28 hectare family property in 1985, aged just 21.This is the region that "established Germany's reputation for world class white wines" (Hugh Johnson) and the Magdalenenkreuz Riesling Spätlese is a wonderful example. Fermentation is left to the natural processes of 'wild yeasts' and, in a technique borrowed from Meursault, the wines are left on their lees until spring. This results in a full, rich and complex wine that is both medium sweet and minerally fresh.A wine to cellar or savour now with fine fish or pork dishes.
