One of Spain's oldest vine growing regions, Cariñena's winemaking first flourished in the Middle Ages under the protection of the monasteries. Today this remote corner in northeast Spain is home to "fruity, modern, well-made wines that offer fantastic value for money" (Harpers). Don Mendo is a beautifully mature Gran Reserva from Bodegas San Valero, one of the oldest cellars in the region. One of their wines was chosen, above all others, to serve to King Juan Carlos when he visited the region on the DO's 75th anniversary. A lush blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha and the eponymous Cariñena variety, Don Mendo is soft and juicy with a core of intense red fruit and gentle vanilla spice. The perfect partner to roast pheasant or partridge.
