Rioja was the first region in Spain to receive DO status in 1926, but, in fact, it has had rules in place governing certain aspects of its wines since 1560! Barón de Barbón is from a cellar founded in 1926 by José Murúa Villaverde, himself a descendant of a long line of winemakers. When he retired, the winery was sold outside the family, but in 1982 one of his sons - Julián Murúa Entrena - repurchased the bodega and is now continuing the family tradition.Julián crafted this elegant red in his recently modernised winery, maturing just a small portion in barrel to add subtle notes of cedar and liquorice to the lush fruit. He recommends sharing a bottle alongside a selection of tapas dishes, or with a chorizo and chickpea stew.
