If you love rich New World reds, you’ll love this Sicilian Nero d’Avola. We were introduced to Barone Montalto by ‘Mr Papavero’ Scipione Giuliani, who came across the winery on his travels around Sicily. This modern estate was founded in 2000 to show the world Sicily was capable of producing more than just anonymous bulk wines. The Montalto team knew that with cooling sea breezes, high altitude vineyards and countless hours of sunshine, the island could produce wines of delicious quality like this. Winemaker Federica Lauterio takes hand harvested Nero d’Avola – a classic southern Italian variety – and adds a splash of ripest Syrah to craft this modern, juicy wine that’s soft enough to enjoy on its own or with pizza, pasta or roast meats.
