Chianti
Chianti is Tuscany's most widely known wine and centred on the hills between Florence and Siena. It has eight sub-zones, the best of which is Chianti Classico, followed closely by Chianti Rufina (not to be confused with the long-established brand, Ruffino) and Chianti Colli Senesi.
The general Chianti 'formula', originally developed over a century ago by Baron Ricasoli, remains much the same today - mainly Sangiovese with the optional addition of small amounts of local varieties such as Canaiolo.
Styles vary from simple Chianti - tangy, fruity and made for early drinking - to Chianti Classico Riserva. This is an extremely serious wine made from the fruit of low-yielding vines, aged in wood and built to last a decade or more.
