Southern France
The Languedoc boasts a wealth of different grape varieties, plenty of sunshine plus a spirit of innovation and optimism that have earned it the title 'The French New World'.
There are a few good-quality appellations making wonderfully traditional wines - Fitou, Corbières, and the Minervois are great examples. In the 1970s we were the first to introduce them to the British public and a loyal fan base quickly developed.
For every traditional winemakers though there is another who won't be dictated to by the appellation system, opting instead to produce innovative Vins de Pays and wines from single grape varieties such as Cabernet, Syrah, Merlot and Chardonnay. The overriding character of these wines is one of ripe fruit flavours. Quality may vary, but is often stunningly high, and, if you know the right people, tremendous bargains can be found.
Our buyers work hard to track down the best buys, often made in quantities too small for the big supermarkets, and the local vignerons have come to respect our expertise. We feel our Southern French list is the best around.
