Description
Pinot Grigio is today the world's Number One white grape. Its most sought-after wines are those from northern Italy ... available but at a price, especially after the low yields of 2007. However, go a little further east and the historic vineyards of Hungary are also producing some excellent value, appetising wines like the elegant Baron Lazare.

It is thought that Emperor Charles IV took Pinot Gris cuttings from his estate in Burgundy to the Cisterian monks in Hungary, a religious order known for its great vineyards. Over the centuries, it has spread from there to Baden in Germany, where the grape is known as Rulander and to Alsace, France, where it is called Pinot Gris. It is also planted in Italy, Austria, Eastern Europe and now, in a small way, in the New World. It still exists in Burgundy, where it's called Pinot Beurot and can be included, unusually, in the reds, though it rarely is.

This crisp white comes from a cellar in the Pazmand region of Etyek founded in 1949, and thoroughly modernised since the fall of communism. It is now well-equipped with cool fermentation equipment essential for producing fresh, modern whites, and has won many awards for its efforts. Gabor Laczko is the dynamic young winemaker at the cellar. He has used the pick of Pinot Grigio grapes and cool-fermented them.
