This elegant white is ideal with Italy's traditional antipasti. It'll be great too with grilled white fish, prawn salad, fennel risotto or white meats with a creamy lemon sauce.

Description
Conti Leopardi is made from one of Italy's most characterful white grapes - a variety that performs at its best in the vineyards of the Marches, in central eastern Italy, on the Adriatic coast. Its best wines take a little while to come round, then develop a superb nutty, buttery complexity still with a taut lemony acidity, not unlike a classy Chablis. This superbly elegant white comes from the noble Leopardi family whose ancestor Giacomo, a 19th century poet, is as important to the Italians as Shakespeare is to us. They have been winemakers, as well as artists, for the last 500 years.

You'd normally have to move in very fashionable circles to have a wine made for you by the celebrated Leopardi family, but long-established friendships have resulted in this exclusive Verdicchio Classico, created by Pierfrancesco, the modern day Count Leopardi.

The count's vineyards lie at over 350 metres above sea level, on well-ventilated hillside slopes, with rocky, limestone-rich soils, which accounts for the elegance and finesse of this wine. Vines over 30 years old ensure the concentration in this white is excellent. It was also made in the outstanding 2006 vintage - cooler temperatures during the Summer has resulted in more defined, deeper flavour.

This elegant white is ideal with Italy's traditional antipasti. It'll be great too with grilled white fish, prawn salad, fennel risotto or white meats with a creamy lemon sauce.

I'm enjoying a glass of this as I compose this ... Mr J Mitchell,
I'm enjoying a glass of this as I compose this message. What a treat! a single bottle from the best of Italian mixed case but I'll certainly be reordering. Light but with just enough of an edge to catch the imagination. I've bought decent Chablis at more than twice the price that can't beat this. Thanks Tony. - Mr J Mitchell, - 06/06/2008 19:08:20
