Description
Marsanne is a rare white variety slowly gaining in popularity at the expense of its blending partner Roussanne. Originally from the Rhône, Marsanne is also now planted in southern France and a few places in the New World, namely California and Australia.

Indeed, Australia has some of the oldest plantings of this grape in the world and uses it to great effect to produce weighty, spiced whites as well as rich, unctuous fortified wines in Victoria. Nearer to home, it is one of only two white grapes allowed in the white northern Rhône wines, Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Saint-Joseph and is also used in the south, particularly in white Châteauneufs!

Pech de Calade comes from a cellar close to the medieval, fortified town of Carcassonne and takes its name from the location of the vineyard: pech, meaning 'little hill' and Calade being the name of its lieu-dit. The cellar is extremely quality-conscious and has gone to great lengths to pinpoint the most suitable terroir for its Marsanne grapes and all the others that it grows.
