Description SEVEN awards so far for this rich, weighty, yet supple red from the northeastern reaches of Spain. It's from Tarragona, part of Catalonia which has transformed its industry from the production of a sweet fortified wine, known as 'poor man's port', to making high quality, powerful reds, in the style of their grand neighbours in Priorat. Many of the region's grapes are used for the production of cava in next door Penedés too.
Monasterio de Santa Cruz is from a cellar that was founded in 1898 and is today still run by the original Padro family. The bodega lies in the heart of the Ebro Valley (the same Ebro river that runs through Rioja) at a height of around 450 metres. This red is made from largely Monastrell (aka France's Mourvèdre and Australia's Mataro), with a portion of silky, strawberry-rich Tempranillo, and all picked from old bush vines that are between 25 and 70 years old.
Due to the vines' maturity, they naturally produce a small amount of fruit - around 40 hectolitres per hectare. The vineyard surrounds the old monastery of Santa Cruz, hence its name.
Expert winemaker at the cellar is Mario Garcia who has had experience throughout Spain (including Priorato, Montsant and Penedès), and has picked up numerous awards for his wines, including a clean sweep of 5-star ratings in this year's edition of the Guía Peñin (a sort of Michelin guide to Spanish wines).
