Description Built in 1783, Château Queyret-Pouillac is located in the heart of the Entre-Deux Mers, in the ancient commune of Saint Antoine du Queyret, an important old staging post on the pilgrimage route to Saint Jacques de Compostelle.
Ludovic Leherle is the proud owner, a man passionate about quality. He goes to great lengths to achieve this in his wines, green harvesting in July (cutting off some of the unripe bunches, to reduce yields and concentrate flavour), and picking early in the morning to maximise the fruit quality.
His vineyards are situated on the hill of Pouillac, with the quiet river of Queyret meandering at the bottom, hence its name. The vines, some of which are 45 years old, grow on excellent chalk-based soils, similar to the best terroirs in Saint-Emilion, with ideal exposure to the sun and good drainage. Merlot is the dominant grape - usual for this part of Bordeaux - to lend its generous, velvet-textured ripe plum fruit, with a little of both Cabernets to bring structure, colour, raspberry and cassis notes.
2006 has proved a good, earlier drinking vintage for many Bordeaux, without the huge structures of the 2005s.
