Description
Palacio del Conde is a rare Gran Reserva from Valencia. Now with seven years age, it's deliciously mellow and complex - sweet, ripe strawberry character with a long oaky finish. Also known as Madrid-by-the-sea (as this is where the Madrileños flock at the weekend for a little seaside relaxation), Valencia lies in eastern Spain. On the coast, you'll find its busy port, while inland there are vineyards, orange groves and extensive paddy fields as this is the rice capital of Spain. It is here that paella was said to have been invented.
Most of the wine from Valencia is midweight and for early drinking. Finding a Gran Reserva is almost unheard of. This one comes from a cellar established in 1917, the flagship winery of one of the most important cellars of the region. It is regularly praised in Spain's premier wine guide Guida Peñín where it has received 90+ points. Winemaker there is the Chilean Victor Porter who brings a New World edge to the cellar's wines.
Made in the outstanding 2001 vintage, Palacio del Conde is silky, berry-rich Tempranillo, with a dash of raspberryish Garnacha, all with outstanding intensity thanks to the grapes from low-yielding, half-century old vines. An extra layer of complexity comes from a year's ageing in oak.
