Description
This big red is the result of a challenge we put to top Cape winemaker Franz Smit at the Spier Estate in 2006: to make us the biggest, richest red he could. His special project Groote Kaap 2006 was a hit with customers and became our quickest selling South African wine ever.

Franz has won truckloads of golds and trophies and the coveted General Smuts trophy in the last couple of years. South Africa's Wine magazine voted the Spier Estate among the top SA wineries for both red and white wines and wrote: "As Spier's top gun, Smit cuts an impressive figure."

Formerly an instructing officer at the Luhatla army battle school, he signed up at Elsenburg and graduated top of his class in 1995. He has travelled widely in France, Italy, Germany and Australia, to perfect his skill. He was hugely excited when we approached him with this project wine, and even more excited by the result!

The wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon all hand-picked in the early morning from the Montagu region of Klein Karoo. There is no possibilty of night-picking there due to the presence of leopards in the vineyards at night! The Klein Karoo boasts fantastic wildlife (including cheetahs that the cellar sponsors) as well as 355+ days of sunshine.
