Serving suggestions
With more weight than most Riojas, this is a silky soft, full-flavoured red - perfect with lamb, roast pork, tomatoey pasta or an aubergine, tomato and mozzarella layered bake.
Description
"FROM virtually no presence in Australian vineyards just five years ago, Tempranillo has become one of THE trendiest red grape varieties in Australia ? eminently suitable to Australian conditions" was the conclusion from respected wine journal, Harpers. Tempranillo is of course the noble grape of Rioja. It is widely planted across Spain, under various different pseudonyms (Cencibel, Tinto Fino, Tinto Roriz and many more) but grown very little anywhere else in the world ... that is until five years ago, when Aussie winemakers took a shine. It still doesn't account for much of Down Under's plantings, but that total is growing.
This is a gorgeously supple red, full of dark Summer berry fruits from the Casella family. The winery has an impressive history - winner of 350 trophies and medals in just four years, plus the revered Jimmy Watson trophy - the most coveted prize of them all. The property lies just outside Griffith, in Riverina, New South Wales, and like many in this region, was founded by emigre Italians in the 1950s.
Today, it is run by John Casella, who has always had a love of the more unusual grapes and was savvy enough to plant them back in the 1980s. Now his is one of the few properties in Oz with mature vineyards of unusual varieties. This is a real bonus as these older vines produce more powerfully flavoured fruit.
Just like the best Rioja, this pure Tempranillo red has been aged in oak to lend sweet, toasty vanilla notes to the fruit.
