Description
Montepulciano is one of the top red grapes of Italy, performing at its best in the vineyards of Abruzzo and the Marches on the peninsula's Adriatic coast. It tends to produce deep, rich velvety wines with a luscious chocolaty plum character. Some of the wines are for easy drinking, others like this are oak-aged and more serious and benefit from cellaring.

Torre Galasso comes from the great Galasso family estate which lies on top of a hill, surrounded by its own vineyards and with a backdrop of the Apennine mountains. Owner Ettore Galasso has 130 hectares of vines himself, grown between 150 and 400 metres. At this altitude, the vines enjoy a temperate climate with a good drop in temperature at night. This helps preserve acidity and aroma, plus slows down ripening, so that the fruit is deeper and richer.

'Torre' in this wine's name means tower and refers to the estate's tall building among the vines. The Galasso family's first ever winery, run by Ettore's father, was situated under this tower (indeed, Ettore's father was actually born in the downstairs room of this edifice!).

To aid the family in their quest for quality, they brought in expert winemaker Loriano di Sabatino. He has crafted this red purely from Montepulciano, all the grapes handpicked to ensure only the healthiest, ripest berries went into the vat. The juice was traditionally fermented, then finished with six months in French oak barrels to lend a serious layer of savoury, woody complexity to the dense, dark fruit.
