Oxley's Shiraz is Down Under's number one grape in its element, with its chunky nature and abundance of spicy bramble fruit. The wine was crafted by Danny Toaldo at the Rossetto Estate situated just outside the Riverina region in New South Wales. The grapes were vinified in open fermenters, ideal for this variety, extracting plenty of flavour and soft tannins. Plus, oak ageing has given the wine an even softer feel, and added notes of vanilla and spice to the rich fruit.
This supple, weighty Shiraz is named after a famous early explorer of outback Australia in the early 19th century. Oxley is said to have exclaimed, upon seeing the Riverina area, "a country which for barrenness and desolation I can think, have no equal." It took the miracle of irrigation to transform this barren landscape into the vine-strewn land it is today. Oxley's gravestone was discovered long after his death in a Sydney suburb, used as a doorstep!
