Claret, the red wine of Bordeaux, was Britain's favourite wine for a thousand years, until the Aussies came along with their sunbaked, super-powerful reds. But now we're seeing a big swing back to French classics, as wine lovers want gentler, civilised, cool-climate wines that are not too alcoholic. So … here's an offer of mature clarets from Bordeaux's greatest vintages since the Second World War - 2000 and 2005.
Made in our own cellars by trophy-winning winemaker Jean-Marc Sauboua, from prime Merlot grapes grown by our neighbours, these two wines are simply a joy to drink. Réserve des Confrères 2000 offers fascinating aromas and enticing flavours that show off its - forest-floor, spice and mellow plum. Laithwaite Merlot 2005 was aged in the finest oak barrels (France's finest, of course) and is packed with full flavours of black plums and berries. Very long-lasting too.
