Description With its plentiful sunshine and well-established plantings of indigenous grape varieties, Puglia, was well placed for the winemaking revolution that has occurred there in recent years. The Times wrote "Puglia is one of Italy's prime new-wave wine sources, delivering terrific value for money", and Anthony Rose of The Independent notes "Puglia contains a rich stock of interesting native reds, with Negroamaro and Primitivo showing the best potential".
Cantine Due Palme is one of a number of wineries in the region that have begun focussing firmly on quality rather than quantity. Thanks in part to their star winemaker Angelo Maci, they have been voted southern Italy's 'Winery of the Year' two years running.
Angelo made this wine purely from Primitivo, which is more commonly known as Zinfandel in the States. In the heat of Italy's deep south, it produces fantastically rich, powerful reds with plenty of ripe fruit. Angelo chose to mature the wine in oak before release, allowing the flavours to integrate, and adding notes of spice and vanilla.
We've been championing Pillastro for a number of vintages, and now the rest of the world is beginning to catch up. This vintage won a Silver at Belgium's premier wine competition, while the cellar won a Special Prize at Vinitaly for the winery with the highest medal tally in the whole of Italy!

An excellent flavoursome wine as described. Full of flavour, well rounded and even worth drinking on its own without food. We first tried it with a home-made rissotto(my husband) and will definitely order more. - Mrs J Strassen, Anglesey - 24/10/2008 13:28:26

I have ordered many wines from Lathwaites in the past, but when I stumbled across Pillastro Primitivo I was immediately hooked and now although I drink other wines when I have to, I always look forward to my next glass of Pillastro Primitivo with its distictive rich smoothness and slightly sweet fruity aftertaste. In my opinion it is unbeatable. - Mr A Leigh, Gloucestershire - 05/09/2008 15:02:14

An incredible journey, oh so smooth, and then a firework display of summer fruits - how can they do all this with a red wine? Must investigate further...... - Mr S Ballago - 24/08/2008 12:53:27

Absolutely brilliant - I was hooked on it from the first bottle and although I occasionally try other reds I always come back to Pilastro Primitivo - it's simply the best taste for the best value. I hope the quality can be maintained in future years. - Mr D Hoyle, Gwent - 15/08/2008 09:50:52
