Description
The Mclaren Vale is one of Australia's finest growing regions, home to many small boutique wineries run by dedicated winemakers intent on focussing on quality rather than quantity. The Times wrote "McLaren Vale is one of Australia's top spots for the Shiraz grape, and the 2005 is the best year in the noughties".
This powerful yet elegant and refined red is from the family-run Scarpantoni estate. Domenico Scarpantoni, an italian immigrant, began growing grapes in the McLaren Vale in 1958, and in 1979, with the help of his two sons, built a winery that now enjoys almost cult status in Australia. They have accumulated over 500 medals to date in National Wine Shows, culminating in winning the Jimmy Watson Trophy, which is awarded annually for the best one-year-old red wine, and remains Australia's most coveted wine prize.
Domenico's Block Shiraz is made from a parcel of old vines planted by Domenico, a single vineyard based on ironstone soils that produces fruit with minerally complexity and excellent concentration of flavour.
After fermentation, the wine was aged for a year in French oak barrels for added complexity. The wine is powerful, full of rich, ripe, dark berry fruit with notes of tar and liquorice, finishing long and elegant.
