Description Home to the Italian Riviera and Ferrero Rocher (there are hazelnuts in abundance there), Piedmont is one of Italy's most famous wine regions. It produces three million hectolitres per year, over half of which is either DOC or DOCG (compare that to Puglia, where only 2% of production is DOC/DOCG).
In fact, it is home to more DOCG wines - seven in total - than anywhere else in Italy. The appellation lies in the northwest of the country and is best-known for producing the top reds Barolo and Barbaresco. Dolcetta also features prominently there.
Its finest white wine, however, is Gavi, made from the Cortese grape, and is renowned the world over for its elegance and finesse. It is produced in Piedmont's southeast corner, close to Liguria and the sea. Indeed, its gastronomic culture has more in common with its neighbour than the rest of Piedmont, which might account for its preference for this crisp, dry white - a perfect accompaniment to the local seafood.
Gavi di Gavi signifies a wine from the 'inner sanctum' - the very best vineyards. Yours is from a small single vineyard estate up in the hills close to the town of Gavi, which belonged in the 14th century to Carmelite monks.
It's made from pure Cortese, cool fermented and bottled young to capture all of its delicate fruit and freshness. It's from the 2007 vintage, which saw yields drop throughout Italy, but most dramatically in Sicily where only half the usual volume was harvested.
