Description Chile lies along the southwest coast of South America and is considered by experts like Hugh Johnson to be one of the most naturally perfect environments for the vine. With 5,000 kilometres of coastline to the west and the Andes stretching along its eastern border, it is geographically isolated. So, when the root-munching phylloxera beetle decimated vineyards of Europe and elsewhere in the late 1800s, Chile escaped unscathed. This has been hugely beneficial to its wine produc tion and today it's known as one of the most exciting wine producing countries of the world. What sets Chilean wines apart is their New World ripeness of flavour, uncommon purity of taste and the sort of elegance normally associated with the best of the Old World.
Chances are you will never have tasted a wine quite like this so you're in for a delightful surprise. It's a highly successful combination of Spanish grape Moscatel (very aromatic and reminiscent of orange blossom) with the more familiar Semillon (scents of beeswax, honey and lemon).
The brains behind the wine is Matias Rios at a celebrated winery in the Colchagua valley. And the name? 'La Manta Rayada,' means the striped shawl - the traditional, colourful garb of Chile's huasos or cowboys. Try it and you'll see what an appropriate image this is!
