Beefy reds are perhaps what Argentina is best-known for, but here is convincing evidence that the country is a serious challenger in the white wine stakes too.
Taking inspiration from the classic white Bordeaux blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, Lake Diamond is a fresh and aromatic dry wine. Compared to Chilean Sauvignon, Argentina's version is less intense though equally pure-tasting and delicious. With the addition of Semillon, the wine is creamier and more rounded.
Lake Diamond comes from Mendoza, Argentina's most important wine-growing region and fast becoming a hot tourist destination too. In fact, some have already dubbed it the Napa Valley of South America. The wine is named after the Laguna del Diamante and the nearby volcano which casts a diamond-shaped reflection on its surface.
It is the brainchild of greatly respected Argentinian winemaker Rodolfo Sadler who has been at the top of his game for the past 20 years. The grapes come from the San Roque vineyard whose owner is specialist vine-grower Domingo Faustino Sarmiento. He tells us that ample snow-melt from the Andes means that, despite low rainfall, there's no shortage of water here for drip-irrigation.
