Sauvignon Blanc wines are very much in vogue and joining Pinot Grigio in the popularity stakes. The grape is most famous in the Loire wines of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé and the Kiwi examples, namely Cloudy Bay and its mates, from Marlborough.

As you'd expect, this international star has now been adopted all around the world. It prefers a cooler climate so that it can retain all its vibrant acidity, pungent aromas and grassiness. This can be tricky in the hotter areas of Australia, but in the higher altitude slopes of Argentina, this crisp style can thrive.

Meaning 'the hidden vineyard', Finca La Escondida is one such site. It lies in a high Andean Valley in Argentina's leading Mendoza region and has an excellent climate for grapes: cold nights and clear sunny days help to produce fabulous aroma and acidity in the wines, while its stony soils are also an advantage.

Finca La Escondida is from one of the leading cellars in Mendoza, the Andean Winery, founded in 1914. Rodolfo Sadler is the chief winemaker, numbered among the top ten in Argentina. Grapes for this wine were picked at dawn, when it is coolest, quickly transported to the cellar in small baskets and kept at a low temperature until the wine was bottled.
