Once the source for fine wines destined for the Tsars of Russia, Moldova today seems stuck in a time warp. Running water is almost unheard-of and the most common form of transport is horse and cart. Yet, its wine potential is enormous and to hurry it along, we helped a promising cellar in Cahul by investing in modern technology and lending them winemaking expertise.
The winery in question is the medal-winning Corten estate which lies in the valley of the river Lungata, in Cahul, southern Moldova. We started working with the team about a decade ago and have been delighted with the award-winning results.
Pinot Grigio is best known today for its wines from northern Italy. This Moldovan one, however, is particularly elegant and intense, with a little more weight and spice than the Italian equivalent. Since 2002, all the grapes of the Corten estate have been certified organic by an official body in New Zealand. This is largely thanks to an excellent climate: the soils and plants are almost entirely pest-free, due to a biting wind which either freezes or blows any trouble away. Plus there is clear sunshine during the day and a large drop in temperature at night, to slow down ripening and help retain aromas, acidity and varietal flavour.

This is my first review of any wine. I thought Moldovan wine! Yeah, right. However, its is remarkably clever. fresh, smooth, hint of pear, apple, citrus. with that distinctive Pinot Grigio palette. It really is a good wine. - Mr M A Burn, Tyne And Wear - 20/02/2008 18:46:22

Tasting Notes & serving suggestions
Colour - Mid-gold hue.
Aroma - Hints of gentle peach, lime and grapefruit. Stony edge.
Taste - Crisp, minerally citrus character supported by rounder peach notes and just a suggestion of spice.
Serving suggestions Albastrele makes a fine food partner: try with creamy fish pie, prawn and crab risotto, chicken in a creamy sauce or linguine with cream and asparagus.
