The great Riesling revival is back on track. And it's the Aussies who are responsible for bringing this fabulous variety back into our lives.
Australia adopted Germany's noble Riesling grape with great success in the 19th century. It first arrived in the Barossa with Silesian immigrants and soon became the country's most widely planted white variety - something not even Germany can lay claim to.
Thanks to its naturally crisp acidity, Riesling grows happily in warm regions like the Barossa Valley in Australia and retains great freshness. But it's in Australia's cooler areas - like Tasmania, Eden and Clare Valleys - that it really shines. In James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion 2009, the country's top two Rieslings (rating 96/100) are both from Clare.
Clare Hills Riesling is made by Neil Pike - who has worked hard to make sure his white wines are some of the best around. This Riesling has the signature elegance and distinctive flavour of the Polish Hill River: the hilly terrain here makes it the best land for Riesling in Australia.
