When we refurbished the 19th century cellar Le Chai au Quai on the Dordogne in Castillon, next door to Saint Emilion, it was to make classic wines at affordable prices. Jean-Marc Sauboua and Mark Hoddy head the winemaking team, and this wine and others prove how they're changing the wine world for the better.Le Grand Chai is glorious, Merlot rich claret of real class thanks to ripe 'declassified' fruit from top vineyards across the region. Its deep ruby colour is now showing the garnet edges of maturity while its cigar box aromas and generous redcurrant and plum flavours are as seductive as ever. With finesse and elegance too, it has everything that makes great claret so coveted. You'll find it superb with roast lamb, duck or beef.
