On a trip to the Loire on the hunt for Sauvignon, our Buyer was offered a glass of rosé by winemaker Michel Andry. She was so impressed by its crisp, delicate fruit that she asked to buy his whole production (a meagre 500 cases usually reserved for his French customers). It's rare partly because it comes from the tiny appellation of Vendômois and due to the grape - Pineau d'Aunis. This variety may have been popular in the 13th century, in the court of Henry III, but today there's little left. Its vines have been grubbed up in favour of the banker Sauvignon.Délice des Rois - the king's delicacy - sums up the elegance of this delightful pink. As with all good rosés, it's top solo and versatile with food. Try with crab, prawns or tabbouleh.
