Top Californian wines can be pricey if you shop in the Napa Valley and surrounds. So the smart money heads south to places like the cool Edna Valley where sea breezes and morning fogs do wonders for grape quality, but land is cheaper and so the best wines are great value. Third generation family winery Baileyana in Edna Valley is a leading producer of fine Pinot Noir thanks to Burgundian born and trained Christian Roguenant. His CV includes stints in Champagne, the Rhône, Sancerre and New Zealand - but he's been making great Pinot Noir on the Central Coast for almost 25 years. Even so, he says "2007 is one of the best I have ever made". Black cherry, raspberry and with a surprising hint of nutmeg and hazelnut - it's certainly irresistible.
