With a potpourri of aromas ranging from roses to lychees and sweet spice, Angove Gewurztraminer is a heady wine. You might expect it to be sweet, but it is in fact dry and therefore terrific with fragrant Thai or spicy Asian curries. Angove was founded in the 1900s by Doctor William Angove, of Cornwall. He began making wine and brandy as a hobby in the 1880s, but by the early 1900s had a fully equipped cellar and 20 hectares of vines. Today, fourth generation John Angove is in charge, employing two English winemakers, Tony Ingle and Warwick Billings. John planted many unusual grape varieties as experiments in the 1970s and 1980s, and they have now come into their own. This fresh, elegant, rich and spicy wine also makes a lovely apéritif.
